Few weeks back we did plantation activities with our children in the school premises. The groups were formed and they were given responsibility to nurture and grow the plants.
When kids are engaged practically, they learn much more than what they could learn from textbook/theory. Apart from learning the plant life cycle, they learn many other important skills like collaboration, team work, accountability, patience, empathy towards nature and so on.
Children could manage to grow many vegetables – Palak, Methi, Tomatoes, Chillies, Mint leaves etc. They now understand that it takes time and effort to grow food and there are many factors that affects the plant growth (weeds, soil quality, compost, humidity, light etc.).
With such activities, children develop appreciation for food and it helps them understand that it is important not to waste food
